Bonn Tango Festival 2010

Around 500 people will attend this year’s tango festival for four days of tango, tango, tango. There’s something for everyone: from absolute beginners to professional show dancers, from live music to tango DJs, from classical tango to tango nuevo. At four venues across town tango-lovers from as far as Berlin and Munich, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the Canary Islands will tango night and day. Things kick off with an opening milonga (dance evening) at Café Pauke – Bonn’s oldest tango venue – on Thursday, May 6th. This is followed on Friday by a milonga at St. Adelheid community centre in Beuel. Saturday sees the first afternoon of workshops taught by visiting teachers Maria Mondino/Ismael Ludman and Angi Staudinger/Diego Escobar, and resident BonnTango teachers Susanne Illini/Harald Rotter, the festival organisers. Saturday evening brings tango to the marble-pillared ballroom at the Rheinische Landesklinik – a larger-capacity venue chosen in place of the usual Al Sur, which burst at the seams last year in testimony to the festival’s popularity. Sunday rounds off the festival with afternoon workshops and an evening milonga at St. Adelheid’s offering live music, a tango performance and a delicious buffet. After 40+ hours’ dancing over four days, the festival will close in the early hours of Monday, May 10th.
Note for tango die-hards with staying power: Outside the official festival programme, BonnAires tango studio in Beuel will host after-parties from 2am till dawn after each festival night (except Sunday).
