Cologne curiosities: the Kallendresser

Cologne is full of little curiosities and one of my absolute favourites is the Kallendresser. Stand outside number 24 Altermarkt and look up and you'll see the bottom of the Kallendresser - literally. The little figure of a man pulling his trousers down and poking out his bottom has been a part of Cologne history since the middle ages, but this particular bronze figure was put up by architect Jupp Engels after the war in 1956. There are a number of theories about where he originates from, some think he was put up as a statement to the town hall across the square - making it clear what was thought about the decisions being made there. Another story goes that a roof worker couldn't be bothered to walk all the way down to the toilet in the back yard and instead pointed his bottom over the edge of the roof. Whatever the history, the Kallendresser is still there, poking his bottom out over passer by in the Altermarkt.
