Flea market treasures

There's nothing like a bit of "trödel" - or junk as it's known in English. Back in the UK the craze for "Car Boot Sales" is huge - you don't have to look far to find one: an unused car park, an empty school playing field - at the weekend they'll be filled with cars, wallpaper tables and people sipping tea from a thermos while perched on a garden chair. Here in Germany you really have to go looking for good "trödel" - there are plenty of markets selling fresh produce, clothes and new stuff - but good quality second hand items are not so easy to find. One place you are guaranteed to find some fantastic junk is the Flohmarkthalle on Mauritiussteinweg (close to Neumarkt). From furniture and lighting to vintage clothes and vinyl records - I defy you to leave without buying something. I've been inspired recently by an American website called "Design Sponge" and their "before and after" section where you can find inspiration for what to do with a dodgy looking chair, or a battered chest of drawers and I'm now constantly on alert for furniture I can turn into "a thing of beauty"! Visit the Flohmarkthalle and see if you can find something that inspires your imagination - and remember - one persons junk is another persons treasure.
