Oh No Ono in Cologne

I have it on good authority that "Oh No Ono" is a band to watch.  They're already big in their homeland of Denmark and are now breaking into Europe and the US.  Their style is a pretty mixed bag of alternative pop, electro-clash, funk and new wave, and they've been compared to a host of other Danish bands (that I'm afraid I've never heard of) and The Raveonettes (who I have heard of). Their intricate and otherworldly music defies conventions and expectations (and sometimes gravity).

Find your way to inner peace

Jidô ®

Not long ago I received an invite to do a test training session in martial arts. To be quite honest, I just glanced over it and figured I'd check it out since my last self defense course needed a top up. When I arrived at the dojo I was greeted warmly by Michael Thomanek, the founder of a new technique called Jidô ®. I found out that it would have been very beneficial for me to have read through the information beforehand. Jidô ® is not a martial art technique and it is not even a form of sport, but an individual way of finding your own inner strength and presence.

There's nothing like a bit of "trödel" - or junk as it's known in English.

Muggel - the place to be in Oberkassel

Let’s meet at Pendel

pendel

If you live in Bonn your automatic answer to this question would probably be  “Where and when?”. The Cafe, Bistro Pendel  is probably the best known gastro address in the city. It is more than just a meeting place it is an institution in Bonn. Saturday and Sunday don’t have a monopoly on Sekt brunches here; any day of the week you’ll find the place full of early diners and it is not only brunches that are served. There are the chef’s daily selections to choose from as well as a multitude of dishes to be found on the menu.

Into the dragons lair

Now that Spring is finally here it's time to start thinking about venturing outside again.

Animal magic in the Lindenthaler Tierpark

deer

There’s nothing kids like more than getting close to animals and in Cologne there is a great place where kids can do this for free  – the Lindenthaler Tierpark.  It’s a fenced off part of the Stadtwald/grüngurtel where you’ll find goats, sheep, deer, turkeys, chickens, peacocks and other fowl, plus the donkey pair Dolores and Pablo, who have just had a baby.  You can feed the sheep, goats and deer - with animal food dispensers on hand stocked with boxes of food for €0.50 a go – watch delightedly as the goats and sheep jostle each other

Südstadt living

ecco

Deep in the heart of the Südstadt, behind Chlodwigplatz, is the cheery and friendly Ecco restaurant.  Daytime it’s full of bleary eyed Mum’s with sleeping infants in prams, sipping sneaky espressos and flicking through Gala mags.  Lunchtime it’s full of local business people, media types and creatives enjoying a healthy lunchtime snack, evenings the Südstadters come out in force to dine and enjoy the warm and friendly hospitality.  In the summer the broad terrace is always full, and even in the deepest winter you’ll find someone huddled up in

Shaken or Stirred?

martini

Cocktails are by no means a new way of selling us attractively decorated drinks in bars. They have been around since the early eighteen hundreds and I doubt there is a mix that has not been tried. The very first cocktail was concocted in 1806, in California, and was named the now famous Martini. By the 1830s gin-cocktails were already being dispensed to New York’s high society and they were soon to be followed by whisky cocktails.

Am Aschermittwoch ist alles vorbei!

lips

We all know the saying but no-one really wants to believe it - today - on Aschermittwoch, the Carnival season is officially over. As a dedicated "carnivalistin", on one hand I'm sad - but on the other, I'm happy it's all over for the sake of my skin. Being out in the cold weather for days at a time, wearing tonnes of lipstick and no gloves (because they just didn’t go with the costume daaarling!), my skin and hands need some special attention. But what should I use to return them to their pre-carnival beauty?
