Looking for something made local, not in China? Want to get something for your home or body that's not just cool and original but also made by a local designer? Greatlive is a 'Laden für Kulturbedarf' which is not easily translated into English. It's about lifestyle, art, fashion and music. You'll find handmade long boards, screen printed t-shirts, original art and deco for your home as well as baby clothes, bags and lampshades. The shop is a project led by DJ Cem - who also runs the Beatpackers parties at the Subway Club in Cologne - and a collaboration of around 80 designers, artists and musicians from in and around the Cologne area. It might not have the best location in Cologne, on the corner of Luxemburg Str. (41) and Moltgestrasse. But the previous moped and motorbike shop has been completely stripped out creating a bright airy space that makes the perfect showroom for the many different products and artwork on display. There's also something new going on every week; from book readings to concerts, massage demonstrations to backgammon duels (Saturday 16 February @ 11am). You can catch a surfboard workshop on March 9 and learn how to build your own long or short board. It's fun, it's funky, it's not all that cheap, but you know that your money is going to a local artist or designer and what you're buying is not mass produced. If you happen to catch DJ Cem in the shop he'll tell you about every detail of the shop's transformation and about each one of the products and designers, making it almost impossible to leave the store empty handed. Give it a try. Buy local, go Greatlive.
