Heinzelmännchen Christmas Market

The Alter Markt Christmas Market in Cologne became a favourite of mine last year - up until then I'd been very blasé about Christmas markets in Cologne, saying how once you'd seen one you'd seen them all, and comparing them unfavourably with Munich where each has a distinctive and unique character. Well, someone must have heard me because last year Cologne had an overhaul of its markets, making each one distinctive and unique, and ensuring that a visit to more than one would be truly worthwhile. The Heinzelmänchen Christmas market on the Alter Markt is delightful. Dark wooden huts exude charm, and quite often delicious and irresistible smells. The Alpenwelt stand is an absolute must, and the garlic bread stand quite simply irresistible - despite the bad breath afterwards. I love the antique market that forms a passage between the Heumarkt and Alter Markt markets, you'll be tempted by the treasure on display, but the prices might be a little steep. What's on sale on the stalls is also extremely attractive, hand crafted wooden toys, beeswax candles, gorgeous little round glass lanterns and paper stars, speciality tea's, delicious sweets, and let's not forget the carousel - all the above will bleed your wallet dry, so stock up on cash beforehand - especially if you're bringing your kids along.
