Let’s meet at Pendel

If you live in Bonn your automatic answer to this question would probably be “Where and when?”. The Cafe, Bistro Pendel is probably the best known gastro address in the city. It is more than just a meeting place it is an institution in Bonn. Saturday and Sunday don’t have a monopoly on Sekt brunches here; any day of the week you’ll find the place full of early diners and it is not only brunches that are served. There are the chef’s daily selections to choose from as well as a multitude of dishes to be found on the menu. On the second floor is a popular bar serving, beer, wine and cocktails and the staff are, in general, very attentive. The one negative is that smoking is permitted throughout the premises.

The smoking
Dear Bryan - I know that the smoking issue rages on and on but for some people the fact that they can smoke there is actually a good thing and not "the one negative". There are not many bars these days where smokers are made to feel welcome instead of leprous. So perhaps that last line could have read "This is one of the only pubs left in Bonn where smoking is still permitted."
smoking....
as a "part-time" smoker I'm actually with Bryan on this one - I can't bear smelling of cigarette smoke anymore. I never used to mind back in London - and indeed here when you could smoke everywhere. But since the ban has come into force I really appreciate leaving a bar without reeking of smoke. Plus I like being able to sneak outside with a select few smokers for a sneaky fag, it's a bit like the old "behind the bike shed" days when I started smoking. However - point taken - I think we need a story celebrating the smoking ban debacle and a list of the best places where you can still smoke around the region - tips welcomed.
