Tucked away behind the Mauritius Church, just around the corner from the Mauritius Therme the Pottery Art Cafe is a little oasis of calm creativity which has been attracting budding artists for five years this November.
It's reputation has grown through word of mouth and lots of repeat business, if you've been there once you'll want to go back again and again with friends, family and visitors from back home. I first went with a group of parents and kids and we had a great time creating personalised egg-cups, plates and various keep-sakes and presents for grandparents. My four year old daughter's final creation was highly artistic but not quite the delicate leaf pattern I had imagined. As I looked around the other tables I was impressed by the amount of people who were coming back to continue working on ongoing projects. Intricate patterns, gorgeous designs and amazing drawings, when you're working on something that you might use every day you want to make it look really good. I vowed I would go back again, alone, to make something really special.
The atmosphere of the Pottery Art Cafe stirs up your creative juices; it's calm, laid back, organised and clean. The staff help you to choose colours and give tips on designs and patterns. You pick out your piece of pottery from a huge range of plates, cups, bowls, trinket boxes, tiles, teapots and picture frames, and then choose your paints, stencils, sponges and other design tools. Then you let creativity take over - with tea, coffee and snacks on hand to help you on your way. Once you've completed your masterpiece, you can pick it up a week later, fired and finished.
It's a great place for kids, meeting friends, or just to go and spend a few quiet hours on your own. It's a good idea for kids birthday parties too, you can book a table and let the kids go crazy with paints and pottery. With Christmas looming you could also think about making your own very special gifts.
Until Christmas you can paint till midnight every last Thursday of the month accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine and a buffet. There are also going to be regular workshops for both kids and adults.
So what are you waiting for? Next time you have time on your hands and don't know what to do with your creative urges, check out the Pottery Art Cafe and express yourself through crockery.
