The perfect dinner...

Great food, great service, a view across the river Rhine to the majestic Siebengebirge, sunset, twilight, candlelight and desserts: if that sounds like the perfect dinner to you - then this is where you'll find it. The Bastei in Bad Godesburg used to be a station for the passenger steamboats that operated on the Rhine. It's now a restaurant and beer garden with a perfect view of the river. It's situated on the slip road that leads to the car and passenger ferry: as you sip a cold beer you can watch the little boat chugging across the river, fighting the current at a 40° angle. The restaurant is terraced, at the top is a leafy beer garden which overlooks the Rhine, below is the restaurant with its partly glazed outside terrace, which also offers wonderful views. The menu is compact and full of seasonal specials like white asparagus in May, or pfifferlinge mushrooms in June. Try the carpaccio, which practically melts in your mouth, or the spicy chilli-garlic prawns for starters. For main course the chicken with orange slices and vegetable risotto is a delicious combination, alternatively you could take the juicy lamb or succulent veal. The staff are warm and friendly and make you feel completely at ease, and the view of the vineyard striped hills, the majestic Gasthaus perched on the summit of the Petersberg, and the rushing river Rhine down below, provide the backdrop to what I can honestly say was for me, a perfect dinner.
